Overview
Charleston Belle is an open-pollinated sweet bell bred by the USDA-ARS Vegetable Laboratory in Charleston, South Carolina, to withstand root-knot nematodes. That resistance is its whole reason for being: in sandy Gulf Coast and southeastern soils, where nematodes stunt ordinary bells, this one keeps growing and producing. The plant is compact and carries large, smooth fruit, roughly 89 by 76 mm, that ripens from green to red with good sweet flavor. Green fruit is ready around 70 days from transplanting, with red ripe fruit later. If your peppers have shown galled roots and poor growth in past seasons, this is the bell to try.
