Overview

Black Pearl earned an All-America Selections award in 2006 as an ornamental pepper, and it is the foliage as much as the fruit that wins people over: leaves are glossy and nearly black on plants 14 to 18 inches tall and 12 to 16 inches wide. The round fruit, about three-quarters of an inch across, start out black and turn deep red, so the plant changes its look through the season. The peppers are edible and carry real heat, similar to cayenne, but most gardeners grow it for color contrast against silver or lime-green companions. Start indoors before the last frost, plant into full sun, and skip the stakes; the branching habit holds itself up.
