Overview
Red Savina is a habanero selected by Frank Garcia of GNS Spices in Walnut, California, and protected under US Plant Variety Protection. From 1994 to 2006 it was the Guinness record holder for the hottest chili, with readings reported anywhere from 350,000 to 580,000 Scoville units, well above an ordinary habanero. The wrinkled, lantern-shaped fruit hang from the plant and turn from green to a deep red, with the fruity habanero aroma behind the burn. Plants are bushy and reach roughly 3 to 3.5 feet. As a Capsicum chinense it wants a long season: germinate warm, grow under lights, and set out only when the soil is properly warm, with steady water and feeding in full sun. Expect roughly 100 days to harvest from transplant.
