Overview

Painted Serpent is a striped heirloom of the Armenian cucumber group, which belongs botanically with the muskmelons, not the true cucumbers. Its long, curling fruit can grow 3 to 4 feet but is best cut at about 15 inches, or 12 to 18 for texture, and it wears alternating light and dark green stripes along its length. The skin is thin enough to eat, and the flesh is mild with a faint melon note and no bitterness. Heat tolerance through Gulf Coast summers is markedly better than standard cucumbers. Direct sow after last frost in warm, moist, well-drained soil in full sun, trellis for straighter fruit, and pick regularly since old fruit toughens and seeds up. About 65 days.
