Overview
Caribbean Red, from Burpee, is a habanero (Capsicum chinense) with close to twice the heat of ordinary habaneros. Vigorous, uniform plants about 28 to 30 inches tall bear wrinkled, lantern-shaped pods about 38 by 25 mm, tapering to a blunt point, lime green ripening to a glossy red, with the same fruity, floral habanero aroma alongside the intense, lingering burn. Start seed 10 to 12 weeks before transplanting on a heat mat, since chinense seed wants 80 to 90F and germinates slowly, and set out in full sun after frost. Expect about 75 to 90 days to ripe fruit and production into late fall in warm regions. Handle with gloves; use for hot sauce, jerk seasoning and fruit salsas.
