Overview
Peruvian Purple is a compact ornamental-edible chile with deep purple-black foliage and purple stems, grown as much for looks as for the fruit. The upright pods, about an inch long, start purple and ripen to bright red, so the plant shows two colors at once. Sources disagree on heat, from mildly hot to quite hot, so taste carefully. Plants stay around 18 to 24 inches, ideal for containers and mixed ornamental beds. Start seed indoors 6 to 8 weeks before transplanting and plant out in full sun after frost; the purple pigment develops in strong light. Maturity is around 90 days, and fruit can be picked purple or red.
