Overview

Hidalgo is an open-pollinated serrano type bred by B. Villalon and released in 1986 through Arco Seed Co. It gives longer, larger fruit than most serranos, green ripening to red, on plants 16 to 24 inches with hairy leaves. Heat is listed as moderate at around 17,500 Scoville units, serrano-level. Its main strength is virus resistance: tobacco etch, tobacco mosaic, potato virus Y and pepper mottle, which matters in the South and Southwest where aphid-spread viruses ruin peppers. Panuco is the comparison variety. Harvest begins around 80 days from transplant.
